The butterfly could be considered both a trick and a throw.
This is because it involves both the dog’s skill in catching the frisbee and the human’s skill in throwing it.
The throw consists of spinning the frisbee around itself. There are different ways to throw it, whether through a tip or frontally or laterally, as seen in the video.
In both the tip and frontal throw, the frisbee should be thrown in the direction of the dog, and the dog must be skilled not only in recognizing the rotation but also in timing its jump to catch it without tipping over.
In the lateral throw, the dog must follow the frisbee and make a movement in the direction of the throw. In this case, the human spins the frisbee and throws it in their preferred direction.
Lately, in competitions, we see fewer butterfly throws. In my opinion, this is because the chances of the dog missing the frisbee are higher compared to a simple throw. However, this applies to any slightly more complex type of throw.
Personally, I enjoy this type of throw and like to incorporate it into other tricks, such as passing between the legs, using it in a vault, or within a combination. As I always say in this discipline, creativity knows no limits!
